Pastel & Smudge is a creative arts company based in South East London, founded by friends Hayley and Claire.
“We first got the idea for Pastel & Smudge while we were working at an SEN school in South East London. We developed a number of outreach art projects for the school, involving exhibiting students work in central London. We enjoyed it so much we decided we wanted to build on it and take the project further.” Hayley’s arts background and Claire’s experience as a successful teacher, brings a creative element to education. “We are both passionate about learning and believe that children engage more when the activities they are involved in are fun, imaginative and creative.”
We are especially interested in working with children with Special Educational Needs. Children with SEN can find it difficult to communicate how they are feeling, and the opportunities to socialise are often limited. By establishing a creative platform we want to help these youngsters open up, socialise and engage with others.
Away from schools we started out by hosting creative birthday parties, which include sensory games, face painting and loads of arts and crafts. Due to the success of the parties we are branching out into sensory art workshops, the first of which will be held at Goose Green Community Centre during October half term.
Working with smaller groups we can develop creative skills and a curious mind, skills we believe are essential in child development. The workshops and parties are often themed; including a sensory story to set the mood for the event. Then the children can bond while working on a group project, create individual artworks and take part in games and activities.
Our ethos is to produce fun, exciting and educational sensory arts projects that allow everyone the opportunity to develop and engage their creativity.
